Ulcerated mucosal fragments are infiltrated by an invasive malignant epithelial neoplasm of squamous origin, organized in irregular nests, cords, and solid sheets. The neoplastic cells exhibit marked nuclear pleomorphism, hyperchromasia, and prominent eosinophilic nucleoli with active mitosis. Focal keratinization is identified. The stroma demonstrates desmoplastic response associated with a dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate and foci of tumor necrosis.
