Extensively ulcerated esophageal mucosal fragments are infiltrated by nests and sheets of malignant squamous epithelial cells. The neoplastic cells exhibit enlarged, pleomorphic, hyperchromatic nuclei with prominent nucleoli and moderate-to-abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. Focal individual cell keratinization is noted. Mitosis is active. The surrounding stroma shows a desmoplastic reaction and a chronic inflammatory infiltrate.
