The liver core biopsy sections demonstrate a preserved lobular architecture, but the hepatocytes are markedly altered. There is diffuse, marked enlargement (ballooning) of the hepatocytes throughout the parenchyma, giving them a characteristic "plant-cell-like" appearance, with accumulation of clear, non-vacuolated material within the cytoplasm, which displaces the cytoplasm to the periphery and leaves a prominent cell membrane. The nuclei are centrally located, round, and bland. There is evidence of portal expansion and focal bridging fibrosis, as highlighted by the condensation of the stroma in the portal-to-portal regions. No significant macrovesicular steatosis (fat), cholestasis, or inflammatory infiltrates are identified. There is no evidence of malignancy in the sections examined.
