An astroglial tumor formed of proliferating atypical fibrillary astrocytes exhibiting mild to moderate anaplasia. Cellularity is moderate. Obvious mitotic activity is not observed and no evidence of vascular or endothelial proliferation. No evidence of tumor necrosis in the examined material.
Cytologic smears reveal low cellularity, consisting of scattered, mildly atypical fibrillary astrocytes within a proteinaceous background.
Left temporal lobe brain lesion causing mass effect and significant edema.
Received is a single piece of soft tissue measuring 1.8 x 1 x 0.7 cm. On sectioning, the specimen showed a 1.5 cm cyst filled with gelatinous material. The entire specimen is submitted in a single block for histologic evaluation. Two smears were prepared and stained from cyst fluid.
