Maternal surface of placenta shows a hematoma with related ischemic necrosis of chorionic villi, indicating placental insufficiency due to focal premature placental separation as a result of hemorrhage. However, no evidence of calcification, villitis or amnionitis. The overall picture is consistent with uteroplacental insufficiency due to placental separation.
