Smears consist of a thick, purulent exudate featuring abundant necrotic debris, granular bile pigment, and degenerated acute inflammatory cells. The background shows a massive overgrowth of extracellular bacterial organisms (predominantly rods and cocci). No definitive parasitic structures, such as Echinococcus scolices or refractile hooklets, are identified in the examined fields. No evidence of atypical or malignant cells.
Status post-intervention for an infected and ruptured liver hydatid cyst, presents with a change in biliary drain output from clear yellowish to turbid yellow.
