Core biopsy shows wide areas of fibrosis entrapping few islands of residual pancreatic tissue composed of mildly atrophic acini with preserved islet cells with focal dense infiltration by lymphocytes and plasma cells. Some duct are dilated but the lining is mature. Overall picture is consistent with chronic pancreatitis. However if malignancy is still suspected, please consider rebiopsy. Follow-up is advised.
Smears are hemorrhagic and showing dense infiltration by moderate number of neutrophils, lymphocytes and plasma cells with few clusters of monomorphic ductal cells arranged in honeycomb pattern with other cells showing abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm denoting acinar nature but no evidence of frank tumor in these smears.
Mass in the head of pancreas.
Two samples were received:
1- Tissue biopsy (incisional): one soft tissue fragment measuring 1.2x0.8x0.7 cm, totally embedded.
2- Cytology sample: 2 ml bloody fluid. One smear was prepared and pap-stained.
