Smears shows unremarkable bronchial columnar, superficial squamous cells, pulmonary macrophages and a mild number of neutrophils with some lymphocytes and scattered RBCs. No evidence of atypical or malignant cells.
Four-month history of shortness of breath, chest pain, and an episode of epistaxis. Bronchoalveolar lavage of the right lower lobe and left lingula to evaluate a suspected hilar mass and recurrent right pleural effusion noted on her chest X-ray.
One smear was prepared and stained from submitted 10 ml reddish fluid.
Bronchoalveolar lavage, conventional cytology:
