Fragments of markedly inflamed and necrotic fibrofatty tissue and skeletal muscle, showing marked infiltration by an acute and chronic inflammatory infiltrate, with prominent areas of abscess formation characterized by pools of viable and degenerated neutrophils admixed with fibrinopurulent debris. The surrounding stroma exhibits marked fat necrosis, organizing granulation tissue with prominent neovascularization, and reactive fibroblastic proliferation. Interspersed foci of hemorrhage and hemosiderin-laden macrophages are also present. No epithelial elements are identified. There is no evidence of atypia or malignancy.
