Thyroid gland shows nodular hyperplasia where follicles are variable in size, full of thick colloid and lined by mature epithelium. There is focal follicular cystic change observed in the left lobe sections. Stroma shows fibrosis, interstitial hemorrhage and cholesterol crystals deposition. No evidence of hyperfunction or malignancy.
Progressively enlarging, initially painless neck swelling of four years' duration that developed compressive symptoms over the last four months.
Total thyroidectomy specimen consisting of two lobes with an intact capsule. The first lobe measures 4 x 2.3 x 1.8 cm. Sectioning revealed three gray nodules, the largest of which measured 2 cm in greatest dimension. Additionally, a cystic nodule is present measuring 1.2 cm in greatest dimension. The second lobe measures 4 x 2 x 1 cm. Sectioning of the second lobe revealed three gray nodules, the largest of which measured 0.8 cm in greatest dimension.
