Sections from the nodule showing benign well encapsulated tumor formed of small and large follicles full of colloid and lined by unremarkable cuboidal cells. Adjacent thyroid tissue is compressed and shows focal dense infiltration by lymphocytes amounting at the formation of lymphoid follicles with intact active germinal centers. Related follicles show degeneration but no evidence of oxyphil change of the follicular epithelium. No evidence of hyperfunction or malignancy.
Multinodular goiter and suspected papillary thyroid carcinoma.
Total thyroidectomy specimen consisted of two thyroid lobes with intact capsule: The first lobe measured 8.5 x 5.5 x 5 cm. Upon serial sectioning, it was found to be almost entirely replaced by a nodule that exhibited a grey-hemorrhagic color. The second lobe measured 3.5 x 1.5 x 1 cm. It showed multiple small nodules that were whitish in color, the largest of which measured 0.8 cm.
