The smears are markedly cellular and show a mixed inflammatory population, mainly neutrophils with scattered lymphocytes and monocytes. A few reactive macrophages are seen, some containing granular debris. Occasional ependymal cells are present, seen singly and in small groups, with bland nuclei and moderate pale cytoplasm. Rare reactive glial cells are also identified. No atypical or malignant cells are seen. No organisms are identified.
CSF for cytology. Known case of meningomeleocele and hydrocephalous.
