Sections show few fragments showing several layers of polygonal luteinized cells with massive interstitial hemorrhage into wall. Other hemorrhagic fragment is formed of blood and fibrin clots entangling inflammatory cells. No evidence of fallopian tube tissue. No evidence of chorionic villi, fetal membranes or other conception products. No evidence of atypia or malignancy.
Status post-laparotomy for a patient (6 weeks gestation / Para 6+0) presenting with internal bleeding and an adnexal mass, who underwent a right ovarian cystectomy and evacuation of blood clots with tissue from the pouch of Douglas; histopathology requested to differentiate between an aborted ectopic pregnancy and a ruptured/complicated ovarian cyst.
