Gallbladder wall shows mild to moderate fibrosis with partial mucosal ulceration and marked infiltration by neutrophils, lymphocytes, and plasma cells extending into the surrounding soft tissue with abscess formation, consistent with empyema. Focal areas show luminal dilatation with attenuation of the mucosal lining, consistent with focal hydrops. Glands appear to be entrapped within the muscular coat (Rokitansky–Aschoff sinuses). No evidence of atypia or malignancy.
Acute cholecystitis complicated by gallbladder hydrops and empyema.
Received open gallbladder that measured 7 x 3.5 cm. The mucosal surface appeared ulcerated and exhibited a grey-coloured mass that measured 5.5 x 3 cm. The gallbladder wall thickness measured 0.5 cm.
