(1) Sections of the omentum show fibroadipose tissue exhibiting marked acute inflammatory changes, characterized by a dense infiltration of neutrophils, vascular congestion, and focal fibrinopurulent exudate. No evidence of specific granulomas. No evidence of atypia or malignancy.
(2) Smear shows a dense population of neutrophils with some small lymphocytes as well as reactive mesothelial cells. No evidence of atypical or malignant cells.
Acute abdomen and abdominal pain secondary to acute peritonitis, with intraoperative findings of approximately 1000cc of infected fluid collection, raising suspicion for primary peritonitis.
Two samples were submitted:
1-Omental fragment: fatty tissue measured 13x4x1 cm.
2- Fluid for cytology: 3 ml pale with pus, one smear was prepared and stained.
