Sections show focally ulcerated surface stratified squamous epithelium. The underlying subepithelial connective tissue is expanded by an unencapsulated, highly cellular nodular proliferation. The lesion is predominantly characterized by numerous multinucleated, osteoclast-like giant cells evenly distributed within a richly vascularized stroma composed of plump, ovoid-to-spindle-shaped mononuclear cells. Abundant interstitial hemorrhage and extravasated red blood cells are dispersed throughout the background tissue. At the deep margin, trabeculae of reactive woven bone lined by active osteoblasts are identified. No cytological atypia or evidence of malignancy is identified.
Maxillary soft tissue lesion of 3 months duration.
Two soft tissue fragments collectively measured 1.2x1x0.7 cm with one separate tooth.
