Most of the submitted fragments showing inflamed colonic mucosa. Some fragments showing focally ulcerated colonic mucosa with submucosal infiltration with epithelial tumor composed of solid sheets and groups of uniform intermediate-sized cells having rounded nuclei and small amount of cytoplasm. Chromatin is often fine with occasional micronucleoli. Focally, tumor shows poor attempts at glandular formation. The picture is suspicious of neuroendocrine tumor, marker study ( CEA, Synaptophysin, CD56 and KI67) is recommended for confirmation and exclusion of the other possibility of adenocarcinoma.
