Sections examined from the distal segment show absence of ganglion cells of the intramuscular and submucosal plexus (Meissner's plexus) with hypertrophied nerves. The proximal and distal segments show normally ganglionated submucosal and intramuscular nerve plexuses (Meissner's and Auerbach's nerve). Dissected regional lymph nodes are reactive (0/8). No evidence of specific granulomas. No evidence of atypia or malignancy.
Suspected Hirshsprung disease.
Part of sigmoid Colon measured 4x2x1.5 cm, with attached mesenteric fat measured 3 cm. No gross masses or ulcerations were identified. Eight lymph nodes were dissected largest measured 0.7 cm.
