Sections reveal focally ulcerated surface epithelium with related infiltrating carcinoma characterized by irregular nests and cords of malignant squamous cells showing focal keratinization, and moderate nuclear pleomorphism with active mitosis. Separating stroma shows dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate. Anaplasia is moderate and mitosis is focally active. Tumor infiltrates skeletal muscles of the tongue. Lymphovascular invasion and perineural permeation are not identified.
