The submitted biopsy is superficial, predominantly composed of strands of markedly atypical squamous epithelium with significant cytologic atypia, pleomorphic hyperchromatic nuclei and increased mitotic activity. Tiny fragments of gastric and esophageal mucosa show subepithelial carcinoma composed of irregular solid nests and sheets of large malignant squamous cells exhibiting marked anaplasia and mitosis. Depth of infiltration could not be assessed due to superficial nature of the current material.
