1- Ulcerated mucosal fragments show an poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma composed of solid sheets and irregular nests of markedly pleomorphic squamous cells with enlarged hyperchromatic nuclei, prominent nucleoli and a high nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratio. Keratinisation is minimal and mitotic activity is markedly increased. Areas of tumour necrosis is present, associated with a dense acute inflammatory infiltrate consistent with superimposed infection. The surrounding stroma shows focal interstitial hemorrhage.
2- Sections show a polypoid fragment lined by stratified squamous epithelium with marked acanthosis and pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia. The underlying stroma is expanded by dense, polymorphic inflammatory aggregates composed predominantly of small lymphocytes with admixed plasma cells and numerous eosinophils. No evidence of atypia or malignancy.
Biopsies from lip ulcer and submandibular fungating lesion.
Two specimens were received:
1- Designated as lip ulcer: Soft tissue fragments collectively measured 1.3x1x0.6 cm, totally embedded.
2- Designated as submandibular lesion: one soft tissue fragment measured 0.8x0.6x0.3 cm, totally embedded.
