Smears show a predominantly inflammatory background composed of abundant neutrophils with admixed lymphocytes and macrophages in a background rich in granular necrotic and proteinaceous debris with bile pigment and red blood cells. Occasional degenerating epithelial cells and cell fragments are seen but lack cytologic atypia.
Obstructive jaundice underwent ERCP with stent.
Two smears were prepared from submitted 1 ml brown viscous fluid.
