Sections show partially ulcerated skin fragments with related an invasive skin carcinoma formed of malignant basaloid cells exhibiting moderate anaplasia and only focal peripheral palisading of their nuclei. In some of the groups tumor cells are enlarged and show more abundant cytoplasm (keratotic features). Mitosis is active. The tumor exhibits infiltrative growth with a desmoplastic stromal response and increased mitotic activity. Perineural invasion is noted. Tumor infiltrates reaching skeletal muscle layer. No evidence of lymphovascular permeation.
