Smears examined show a background of abundant hemorrhage composed of numerous intact and degenerated red blood cells. Interspersed within the hemorrhagic background is amorphous, eosinophilic proteinaceous and fibrinous material. Cellularity is scant, consisting primarily of scattered foamy histiocytes and rare degenerate epithelial-like cells. There is no evidence of distinct papillary structures, nuclear atypia, or malignant cells in the material examined.
