<p class="ql-align-justify">Smears examined show a background of abundant hemorrhage composed of numerous intact and degenerated red blood cells. Interspersed within the hemorrhagic background is amorphous, eosinophilic proteinaceous and fibrinous material. Cellularity is scant, consisting primarily of scattered foamy histiocytes and rare degenerate epithelial-like cells. There is no evidence of distinct papillary structures, nuclear atypia, or malignant cells in the material examined.</p>
<p>Rt ovarian cyst</p>
<p class="ql-align-justify">Two smears were prepared from submitted 4 ml reddish fluid.</p>
<p><strong><em><u>Ovarian cyst fluid, aspiration cytology :</u></em></strong></p><ul><li><strong>Consistent with hemorrhagic cyst contents</strong></li><li><strong>Negative for malignant cells. </strong></li></ul><p><br></p><p><strong>COMMENT:</strong></p><h5 class="ql-align-justify">The cytologic findings show a predominantly hemorrhagic pattern with scant cellularity. This picture is non-specific but is most frequently associated with benign conditions such as a hemorrhagic functional cyst (e.g., corpus luteum cyst) or an endometrioma. The absence of epithelial cells in the smear precludes definitive classification of the cyst lining; however, no malignant cells were identified. Clinical and radiological correlation is recommended to confirm the nature of the lesion.</h5>
