Rt and Lt thyroid lobes show nodular adenomatous hyperplasia. Nodules are variable in size and composed of small and large crowded follicles full of thick colloid and lined by mature epithelium. Sections from some of the nodules show compact microfollicles devoid of colloid and lined by cuboidal cells separated by delicate vascular stroma. In these follicles nuclei are vesicular and look active but no appreciable mitosis. Stroma shows mild fibrosis. Associated focal papillary hyperplasia is noted. No evidence of hyperfunction or malignancy.
Multinodular goiter.
Total thyroidectomy specimen showing first lobe measuring 4.5x2.5x2 cm, second lobe measuring 4x2.5x2 cm and isthmus measured 2x1 cm. Thyroid capsule is intact. Serial sectioning revealed first lobe multiple nodules largest measured 0.5 cm, and multiple nodules in the Lt lobe largest measured 0.7 cm.
