Submitted slide shows focal glandular metaplasia of the esophageal squamous epithelium. Glands are of the intestinal type and lamina propria shows moderate infiltration by lymphocytes and plasma cells. One microscopic focus shows superficial changes of surface mucosa by tubular small and large glands lined by atypical columnar cells with hyperchromatic cells, prominent nuclei and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. Anaplasia is moderate. Overall picture is consistent with adenocarcinoma, possibly complicating pre-existing Barrett's esophagus.
