Sections show lymph nodal tissue and adjacent soft tissue with partial effacement of normal architecture by a diffuse, intense acute inflammatory infiltrate. The cellular population is predominantly composed of neutrophils, admixed with variable numbers of small mature lymphocytes, plasma cells, and histiocytes. The inflammatory process extends into the adjacent adipose and connective soft tissues, presenting as cellulitis characterized by stromal edema, marked vascular congestion, and extravasated erythrocytes. Within the soft tissue, there are areas of dense coalescing aggregates of intact neutrophils consistent with early abscess formation. No evidence of malignancy in material received.
