Thyroid gland shows dense infiltration by lymphocytes amounting at the formation of large lymphoid follicles with germinal centers. Thyroid follicles are extensively degenerated and completely absent in some fields. In many foci lymphocytes appear to destroy follicular epithelium extending into lumens of the follicles. Inter-follicular area appears widened in many foci and occupied by a mixed infiltrate of small activated lymphocytes and plasma cells. One parathyroid gland on the right side is identified. No evidence of atypia or malignancy.
Multinodular goiter.
Thyroidectomy specimen showed Rt. & Lt. lobes 4x2.3x1.5 cm and 3.5x1.7x1 cm, respectively. The isthmus measured 1 cm. Thyroid capsule is intact. Serial sectioning revealed 5 greyish rubbery nodules in the right lobe with largest measuring 0.7x0.6 cm, and 2 rubbery greyish nodules in the left lobe measuring 1x0.8 cm and 0.8x0.7 cm.
