Sections show an invasive epithelial neoplasm composed of irregular nests and solid sheets of highly atypical squamous cells infiltrating the underlying stroma. The neoplastic cells exhibits pleomorphic, hyperchromatic nuclei with prominent nucleoli and dense eosinophilic cytoplasm. Mitosis is active. Squamous differentiation is confirmed by the presence of distinct intercellular bridges and focal keratin pearl formation. The infiltrative tumor nests elicit a marked desmoplastic stromal reaction accompanied by a moderate chronic lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate. No definitive lymphovascular or perineural invasion is identified in the sections examined.
